Module 9: Managing Design and Production Process
Photographic Survey
Personally I don’t like the designs produced on the walls. I prefer if we cover the walls with stickers, since it cannot be painted. This ought to include our work in wood frames integrated with the wall stickers. (This is explained further on)
In the corridor one can find a skylight, we even can create an interesting design to make use of this skylight.
The doors and classroom walls need to be re-furbished as they have many different layers of paint. Lighting also needs to be changed for a better and more professional look.

Exhibition Designs
In my opinion the last exhibition wasn’t as fun and engaging for the viewers. While I was researching on the Internet, I found an art exhibition in China related to this subject. This exhibition included 83 oil 3D paintings. Parts were painted out of frames and others with painted shadows to add an effect of an extra dimension. 20 South Korean artists had spent more than 4 months working on these special paintings. This way people could easily interact with the designs. We, as graphic designers, could also produce designs such as photo manipulations or any other related material in an interactive way. A photographer could take photos of the viewers interacting with the designs, which later will be uploaded on the Facebook page as to easily promote the exhibition even further.
In Manhattan an interactive installation was produced. This features 42 swings, which, in turn, move an enormous billowy curtain. "When the swings are in action, the curtain, made of a lightweight silk twill, rises and dips, and the air is stirred, causing further billowing and fluttering," writes the New York Times, "Pigeons and an actress provide a soundtrack." Some people glide on the swings, some lie on the ground under the curtain and some sit on benches to take it all in.
Following this idea, considering that we don’t have enough space inside the classroom, we could create some swings at the outdoor area.

During the lesson Mr. Mahoney mentioned that a sticker company might sponsor us. We can create a wall installation, using wall stickers, reflecting our future job. This would include a vector illustration created by the Interactive and Graphic Design Degree Students. The following images show a clearer image of my explanation. An additional idea is that we can integrate our artwork with the sticker design.
Another interesting option could be to cover the floor with different creative designs.

I also found alternative exhibition stands that may inspire us. In my opinion the most interesting concept was the one which included recycled materials. This could easily be implemented in our exhibition.
We can also exhibit our work in a creative way.
Informational signs can also be printed or projected on walls and floors as another way of communication.
Branding Concept Research
Throughout my research I came across with a branding concept created by previous Mcast Degree students. "The Journey is what Matters" is the official slogan for this branding concept. It consists of vector illustrations and simple character designs, yet very effective.

Projection Mapping
I think this year we can opt for a different concept, including 3d objects integrated with abstract designs. To enhance our projection we can create a specifically designed music with the help of our fellow student whom specifies on sound effects.
(One of my favourites)

Also we can avoid from using only the building, instead we can create different types of any installations scattered all around the area where projections will be displayed.

I found this interesting video of an interactive projection. Basically this projection includes live puppetry, 3D tracking and pyrotechnics, as they transformed the room into three different vignettes. ‘Can you guess the films?!’
Throughout the fashion show, a projection mapping will be displayed. The designs will change according to the dress being exhibited.

Alternative ideas for a projection mapping
An idea that came across my mind was to create a holographic projection mapping which is another way of replacing the usual projection mapping. Even if this idea might be excellent, it’s difficult to implicate it since we have a limited budget. My idea includes the holographic projection taking place inside the theatre as that’s the best place where to viewers could have the most impeccable experience. An alternative idea was to construct a stage somewhere in front of the school. This happens because creating a 360 holographic projection might be too expensive for the school budget.
Another twist for the fashion show, that usually ends the exhibition, may also include the clothing designs in the holographic projection. Another idea might be the one that we could also create a sample model of a dress, which all the clothing designs that the students had produced will be projected on the model.
We could also present the exhibition in an interactive approach. This way the viewers will be included in the exhibition as if they are taking part in. Take a look at the following videos for a better idea:
A fun and interactive idea is the one of a digital graffiti wall. Crowd Activation is a company, which created various sizes of digital graffiti wall. This project included a specific application, a computer, infrared camera and digital spray cans. Using the digital spray cans, an intuitive interface allowed guests to choose from a palette of paint colours, nozzle widths, stencils and backgrounds. After creating their artwork, guests could email it to friends, family, colleagues or themselves direct from the wall. Printed postcard takeaways were possible too. Captured guest art was auto saved on the computer for later upload to perhaps a Facebook photo album or client website.
Task 2 - Exhibition Group Concept
We were split up in different groups. I couldn’t attend to the first group meeting, although I still managed to research more inspirational exhibition and designs. The whole group looked interested. We focused on some of the examples, which inspired us most. Unlike other groups we wanted to create an abstract branding.
Our first concept idea was to incorporate 3D abstract shapes together creating one whole abstract form (Aimed to produce the logo). We were not sure about this concept, because it might confuse more the audience. We came up with other different concepts and ideas although it was hard to decide.
I tried to combine everyone’s idea and create a concept for the exhibition. Some of my group mates wanted to include colour coding, 3D shapes (Cinema 4D / 3D Max), mask/face and different materials. So I came with a concept named 'surFACES'. This basically incorporates two meanings. The whole word can be read as ‘surfaces’, which reflects different types of surfaces (materials). My idea was to include all the types of resources, describing each course found in the school. The word ‘FACES’ signifies that every (face) student has his own unique style of art.
This concept would include faces/ mask incorporated with different mediums. I download a free female head model Using Cinema 4D. I tried to create a hologram effect defining to the Interactive courses.
Chiara Attard Portughes helped me to develop more this idea. She found good examples related to the theme ‘surFACES'. I also linked this concept to an interactive projection Chris Portelli found. (https://vimeo.com/40157631). We can also incorporate people’s faces in the projection. I explained this concept to my classmates although it was not accepted.

Inspirations
ARTIFEX concept
The whole group decided to define more the first concept, also we agreed with carter about the naming the exhibition ‘Artifex’. It is a Latin noun, which means artist and crafts, it can also be used as skilled and creative. We chose the word Artifex because it creates more curiosity to the audience.
We were all distributed in different categories.
Denise, Chiara and Chris – interior and projection mapping.
Nicholas and Julian – Way finding
Julian and Max – Logo
Jacqueline, Jeanette and Andrew – 3D logo
George and Max – 3D renders
Max – Presentation (With the help of Julian and Chris)
Adverts and other additional – whole group

Experimenting in Cinema 4d - creating colour coding backgrounds for adverts + small 'test piece'
The projection concept includes a 3D structure, which will be placed in front of the institutes’ entrance (tower). The structure will incorporate the logo itself and other prisms attached nearby. An introduction of all the courses will be projected at the being of the ceremony. This will feature six different colours and six different shapes combined together, forming the whole logo.
Afterwards the projection will feature an animation explaining clearly each course forming visual abstract shapes and designs. Some of the scenes we considered to include were paint dripping (Fine arts), logo spinning (Interactive), pen tool design (Graphic Design), a 3d model (3d course), TV distortion (Media) and a flash/ silhouette effect (Photography).
Interior Design
The whole group agreed that spaces would be distributed equally among all the students. We think that it is not reasonable that some of us have an advantage for bigger spaces. I respect every student, also his/her opinion although we are very restricted in space. Some of the students who have installations are opting for other solutions such as monitors, posters or books. So even the rest can do so. If you are exhibiting a very good project there’s no need for a large space, the project itself attracts attention. It’s the students duty to make their exhibit space more interesting and eye catching. An installation in a cluttered area will not look pleasing at all.
I asked for opinions about previous exhibitions. The most frequent comments I received were “It needs to be more orangized”, “Some of the work wasn’t even noticeable amongst others”, “An effective interior get people to view your projects more” and “The 3D courses and Fine arts were incredible”. I think that we need to include an interesting interior or interactive designs rather than exhibiting big installations in a cluttered room. We want to convince our audience to be attracted immediately.
Last year the Higher national diploma in Interactive Design exhibit their work in equally spaces and yet created a tent with an interactive game. The 3D course transformed the workshops in incredible exhibition spaces. Although we are graphic designers we still are capable of transforming a boring room into an interesting space. I think we are focusing more about how to fit all the work in the rooms rather than how are we going to attract more people.
To avoid cluttered work, my concept idea included simple shelving mounted to the wall. Also monitors will be mounted on walls, or placed on shelves to reduce the cost of mounts. An alternate idea was to hang the shelves from the roof to avoid using stands. Also in this space provided one can hang, as many shelves he/her wants. I included this option because as I was going trough the list of what everyone will exhibit, some of my classmates want to exhibit more than one project example his portfolio. My concept idea for the interior consisted of very minimal designs.
To make to room look interesting, we agreed to include Chiara’s idea. Create different sized prisms made from paper, which will be attached with the ceiling. To give a professional look, the prisms will light up using LED’s. Shelving’s / posters / monitors will also have LED tubes.
In the middle a stand will be created, so the tablets can be secured.

Exhibition Development
|
In the last few weeks of the semester each student was distributed in a specific group. Chiara, Michela and I were in charge of the documentation section. We were responsible to capture clips and photographs of our classmates working, while creating a short movie and also a printed documentation.
The three of us enjoyed working on the documentation, we were able to understand what was happening during the exhibition in all of the departments. We also had the chance to help and express our opinions in each section. While I was recording the auditions I also was part of the discussion, as the projection group was not sure about the auditions. I then contacted a friend Naomi Mamo and encouraged her to take part in the auditions. Everyone agreed that she would be part of the exhibition, although later on she dropped out due to some issues. The documentation team photographed every moment, were I immediately uploaded every image on g-drive. We made sure that we photographed and filmed each student who attended. I also edited some of the short movies, which were published on the Mcast Facebook page, to promote our exhibition, including a funny video. |
Besides the documentation Chiara and I also helped Silvio to remove the paint off the floor, also I helped the promotional team distribute the exhibition tags.
The printed documentation consisted of different sections, the three of us agreed about a specific layout and each worked on different sections. I worked on the constriction, way finding, the projection and the opening event sections. Also gathered all the spreads in one document.
We also experimented with creative photography ideas to include in the documentation.
Christine was finding it difficult to create the fashion projection. I was able to help her and photographed all the fashion pieces all over again. Apart from that I also animated nineteen pieces out of twenty-eight. Mr. Camilleri remember that due to the tower the projector was rotated vertical. I ended up staying all night at school, rendering all the fashion projection again with the help of Luke Saliba. While I was still at school I also helped the construction team; cleaning and painting.
The construction team had a lot of work and during the last two days of preparations the rooms were not finished. I was a bit cross with some of the students whom didn’t even bother to attend to school to help, neither to see if their stand is right or finished.
