Exhibition Space Analysis
NIZIO Design International for Museum of Contemporary Art in WroclawNIZIO Design International is a company which came up with a concept for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Wroclaw, Poland. The design is highly contemporary, which suits perfectly for the building in question. It also makes use of both natural and artificial light. Thanks to the massive amounts of windows that surrounds the building, the place is always well illuminated and will also provide a unique characteristic to the building.

NIZIO seem to have focused mostly on making a lot of space for the people to go round the museum and make sure not to miss any important artworks. It seems that paintings and drawings that would be hung on the wall will be placed in a massive hall where there's plenty of room for big amounts of people to go around freely and appreciate the pieces without any constraints.
Below we can see an image where big sculptures are giving the space needed so people can go around them and appreciate them from all different angles. This is also a key feature in using the space provided as sculptures or installations need to be admired all around, as well as to get a different perspective of the piece. The right wall seems to have a bunch of visuals swirling around which is also a good idea and use of space since walls usually are there just to hang a piece, a sign or nothing at all. What seems to be lacking in this exhibition space is a way finding system and sign-age. Although the emphasis was on the exhibition space itself, NIZIO doesn't seem to implement a way finding system which we would definitely need for the MCAST End-of-Year Exhibition. |
As said before, the brand of the exhibition is shown everywhere. Directional and Informational signs had the logo of Malta Design Week, something that, I personally believe, we would need to do so the brand will be visible throughout the whole exhibition space. Below we can see a very good example of using the exhibition space as well. On the sides, they had constructed wooden boards where the designer could stick posters and information about their designs, while in the middle there were 3D models of their designs on tables. This helped a lot in the flow as people first saw the information on the poster in a 2D space and then see it in a 3D space from all angles.

Malta Design Week 2011The annual Malta Design Week never fails in showcasing fresh and innovative projects made by both Local and Foreign talents. In 2011, I had the chance to go and see the exhibition first hand, I have to say that I was impressed, not only because of the individual projects, but by the exhibition as a whole. Everywhere you went, you would see the Malta Design Week Logo on both directional and informative signs, as one can see below.
The entrance of the place has to say something, a first impression, something to pull the audience in. In this exhibition, personally, it did not disappoint. As soon as you walked in, there was a red carpet, something which usually is laid out for royalty and/or celebrities. Thus, walking in the building, one would already feel important and drawn to the weird shape of the carpet. This is something that we would need to incorporate in our own exhibition at MCAST for when the audience come in from the main door. |
Garage Milano: A Creative Space without LimitsThis is a bit different than the previous exhibition spaces. It is a place where artists can go and can exhibit their own work. It is an artistic hub. Sometimes it will be packed with various exhibits and others with just one to two full complete exhibitions.
However, as one can see, the space allocated for each and every piece is well thought of and in conjunction with the space provided. Even the shelves are put in a way to be visually appealing and to use as much of the space as possible, something that we need to focus and implement properly in the End-of-Year Exhibition. |
