Fleur's Projection Mapping and Manifesto Progress
Projection Mapping Research
Our main objective for this unit was to create a Projection Mapping video that will be shown on the Grandmaster’s Palace facade throughout the christmas holidays. This had to be done as part of a series of projects being made for Valletta18.
The first thing we did as a class discussion is research on what exactly is “Projection Mapping” since this was a concept that was new to most of us and certainly something that none of us have worked on before. We looked into other projection mappings to get an Idea of what we could do. |

Ralph Lauren 4D ExperienceRalph Lauren created a projection mapping expeirence that they showed in New York, London and other major cities.
It makes great use of the architecture which is something that we're trying to do ourselves. |
BoxThis Projection Mapping Experiment is very Impressive. It creates very convincing illusions and beautiful visuals all from a few simple shapes. The concept behind it is brilliant. This video doesn't fully apply to our assignment since we're doing architectural projection mapping, but it still serves as inspiration.

Imagineers in ExileThis is one of my favorite examples of projection mappings that I've collected. It takes it a step further by including a narrative and performance art, all of which play in sync with the projection mapping. It also really appeals to me visually.

The above were just some examples of projection mapping videos that I've collected. To see more visit my tumblr page linked at the top.
To better understand out client’s needs we made a visit to the location of where the projection mapping was to be shown; The GrandMaster’s Palace. We identified the area onto which the video will be projected onto to get a better spatial awareness of the actual facade.
The limitations where much easier to spot this way as well. We learnt that bottom portion of the building can not be used since it will be obscured by people standing in front of it and that we cannot use the whole length because of the lamp posts that are in the way. Other issues that we encountered was that the distance between the projector and the palace is quite big and the areas surrounding the palace will be well lit so we’ll need multiple projectors to appear sharp and well defined. |

Writing The Script
For our next task, the class divided itself into groups of 5/6 people. In these groups we had to come up with our own script for the Valletta
Palace projection mapping whilst the official one was still being written and finalised. My team was compromised of my self and 4 others; Silvio Micallef, Michela Mifsud, Simon Borg and Matthew Dalli. Together we started brainstorming and came up with a long list of themes that if mplemented would fulfill the client’s needs. The most important of theses themes were: Christmas Cheer and Celebrations Malta’s History and Heritage Maltese Culture Valletta’ History Spectacles and Lighting Effects Once we got these points done we started looking up other exmaples of projection mapping videos to get ideas from and use as inspiration. |
Melbourne Town Hall Christmas ProjectionsThe projection mapping seen in this video was our main inspiration behind our ideas for the christmas celebration portion of the script. We took the idea of stacking presents from 0:44 and also liked the overall colourful and busy feel of the entire thing.

Tokyo Station Anniversary Projection MappingThis video was one of the best and most impressive exmaples of projection mapping that I’ve seen so it was
inevtiable we’d draw inspiration from it. We liked the silhoutted figures visible from the windows at 1:17 and took the idea of reconstructing the Palace Facade from 2:51 |

Finalizing The Script

Once we gathered all the material we needed from the videos and composed the final script and I created some visual assets to be used in the our video presentation. |

Re-writing the Script
When we were given the final script that was written by the client, we realised it was in need of a lot of revision and rewriting.
Our initial script pitch as well as the the others done by our classmates where overall more sombre in mood because we highlighted the aspect of the history of war in Malta. The script that the client presented was on the other hand very lighthearted and whimsical and at times - borderline silly. It is clear by some of the imagery that the client was expecting that he is not familiar with the limitations of projection mapping and the time constraints that limit us from tackling overly complicated imagery, for exmaple the “50 knights breakdancing like something out of X Factor”. What we did next was omit the scenes that where just unlikely to be completed with our given timeframe. We then kept some of the elements and reinterpreted them into a new script. We also took the best ideas from all of the different scripts each group wrote and in the end came up with a more cohesive and feasible script. Some of our origial ideas we presented in our script where incorporated - the use of silhouttes, the christmas tree being consrutcted from the ground up and the wrapping paper covering up the building and then peeling back. Once the script was done we each said what role we’d like to take in developmental part of the process, I signed up for the concept art role. |
SCENE 3
When the first draft of the script was revised and all of the best ideas where amalgamated into the final script, each scene was split up and people assigned a scene to work on.
I was assigned to scene 3, the part in the script that covered the more traditional Christmas aspects like, Santa, Elves and Presents.

Elf FactoryThe idea behind the Elf Factory was to compose every element out of a different kind of sweet/chocolate/candy ect... and where possible make it a traditional maltese sweet. The assets I made included chocolate bar bricks and waffle bricks (the latter of which was unused) as building blocks. Pepermint sweets for wheels and also supplied an alternative in the form of mince pies. Stools and piping made from candycane, marshmallows and icing to represent snow. |

Other elements that I worked on where redesigning a variety of different elves. I also needed to modify them in preperation for animation and be ready to make changes whenever an animator needed them.
I was also tasked with drawing the presents that would be passed around in the wrapping paper machine. I put quite a bit of detail into them that ws unfortunately lost in the final animation since they moved around a lot and where very scaled down. I also helped out in any way I could by offering advice and opinions wherever I could. |
NYE Filming
Despite not being part of the team in charge of the NYE Special Scene, me, Silio and Becky Barry (all from scene 3) offered our help when they needed some people to help with filming and performing.
We had to wait till night time set so that we can film ourselves dancing under UV light against a green screen. This created a silhoutte-like effect. To embellish the silhouttes we also painted differentpatterns on ourselves using neon UV paint. |

MANIFESTO
Our main Idea behind our manifesto is to do something fun and light hearted which we feels best represents our ideals as a group.
We bounced around many ideas, from ourselves as superheros, illustrated backgrounds with us super imposed over it, pinatas, book covers ect... The one we settled on is "The Wheel of Fortune" that expanded to include a deck of Artist Tarot Cards that depending how you draw them reveal your "Art" fortune. |
